The administration at the legendary Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam attempts to diversify its staff and exhibition policy, while facing multiple bureaucratic obstacles, public disapproval, and internal conflicts. Making the audience privy to the functioning of one of the biggest and most prestigious contemporary art institutions in Europe, Sarah Vos’ film addresses the uncomfortable issues of money, underrepresentation (93% of the Stedelijk’s collection is white men, most of whom are dead) and the colonial history of the Netherlands. Many of the insecurities hilariously exposed by White Balls on Walls can be transposed onto the larger hypocrisy of the cultural industry, which exercises in box-ticking and diversity quotas but remains patriarchal and euro-centric at its core.

Post-screening discussion TBA
