 Concerning Violence

Dir. Göran Olsson, English (narration) | 2014
“a prickly, passionate call to arms” – Time Out

Narrated by Lauryn Hill, Concerning Violence is both an archive-driven documentary covering the most daring moments in the struggle for liberation in the Third World, as well as an exploration into the mechanisms of decolonisation through text from Frantz Fanon’s The Wretched of the Earth. Fanon’s landmark book, written over 50 years ago, is still a major tool for understanding and illuminating the neocolonialism happening today, as well as the violence and reactions against it.

The film will be followed by a post-screening discussion with a panel of experts on race, colonialism and culture: Prof. Robert Beckford whose Channel 4 films include The Empire Pays Back, Dr Kehinde Andrews who works on Race and Racism at BCU, Dr Dima Saber from the Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research at BCU, and chaired by Dr Michele Aaron from B-Film: Centre for Film Studies at the University of Birmingham.
